It was a momentous occasion for Llangollen Rugby Club on Sunday afternoon as a large crowd braved the weather conditions to watch Llangollen U18s girls have their very first outing, playing a friendly against Brignorth U18s.
The game began in sunshine and the Llan girls began with a bang dominating all areas, running in two early tries through sisters, outside half Suzie Walker and scrum half Debbie Walker, Harriet Hughes converting one of the two. The weather then deteriorated but this certainly did not affect the girls or their rugby. Llan defended stubbornly, snubbing out any Brignorth attacks and they continued to create pressure of their own, this resulted in them scoring two more tries before halftime from fullback Jess Fleet and Debbie Walker crossing for the second time, Hughes converted one of the two conversion attempts again to see Llan into a 24 – 0 lead. The second half saw Llan playing the same fast flowing rugby but Brignorth stepped up a gear and defended with passion. They also pressurised the Llan line and were rewarded with a try of their own, the Llan girls once again started to pass the ball well and managed to run in two more tries, the first a fine solo break from Suzie Walker and the second a powerful run by second row Hannah Davies before the final whistle. Team Manger Christine Hughes said afterwards “the girls have shown today they can play fantastic rugby no matter what the conditions, they all enjoyed it immensely and cannot wait for the next game, we have got a great group here who are very keen and take on bored everything that Ian coaches them in training which certainly showed today.
The club’s ladies section has a number of U14’s and senior players and would like to develop these sides further if anyone is interested in joining training takes place every Monday at 7pm at Tower Field or alternatively e-mail Christine Hughes at hughes-oaklandsrd@tiscali.co.uk this also includes anyone who maybe interested in coaching or just helping out.
