All the latest from Wrexham rugby club
Wrexham failed to secure a suitable match from the local fixture pool to fill a blank date last weekend and therefore had to step up their training this week in preparation for their top of the table game at Bro Ffestiniog on Saturday (k.o.2.30pm).
It will be a special occasion for two Wrexham players, scrum-half John Roberts making his 250th senior appearance for the club and centre Dan Cheesbrough running out for his 100th senior outing. Both are products of Wrexham’s successful player development programmes and Roberts was an essential cog in the Wrexham Northern Counties side that represented North Wales in Division Two at the start of the Millennium.
The East Walians lead the Division Five North Championship with Bro Ffestiniog occupying third place and only six points behind the leaders. Saturday’s game in front of a festive Gwynedd crowd will be a very daunting task for the visitors, but if they can grind out a victory then they will finish the year on an unexpectedly high note, ready to take on promotion favourites Pwllheli at Wrexham on Saturday 5th January.
WREXHAM YOUTH 27 NANT CONWY 18
Wrexham Youth Team defeated Nant Conwy Youth for the first time in over a decade when they outpointed the former North Wales champions by 27-18 in a Youth Division One game at Wrexham. The visitors took an early lead with an unconverted try but Wrexham recovered to lead by 14-5 at the break with honours fairly even in a hotly contested second-half.
There was a welcome return to the side by centre Gwyn Edwards who notched two tries. Lock Rob Skeath crashed over for his first ever Youth Team try and number eight Troy Roberts weighed in with Wrexham’s final touchdown. Scrum-half Kieran Morris was in excellent form and landed two conversions and a penalty while flanker Jake Edwards made his presence felt in the back-row.
MOLD 2NDS 19 WREXHAM 2NDS 5
Wrexham suffered their first defeat in the North East Wales Championship when they were defeated by holders Mold Seconds at Chester Road. The visitors dominated the game territorially but they were unable to make their advantage count and could muster only one unconverted try by lock Iwan Roberts. Number eight Dean Griffiths was the pick of the bunch for his gutsy performance against his old rivals.
